Place the robots.txt in your root on your server

Use CSS instead of color, size and font tags

Change the link buttons or java links in to text links

Make sure to have a site map page

Make sure you have a 404 page

At the bottom of each page use menus as text links

Make sure your page code is not bigger than 100 K

Submit your site to ODP and Yahoo Directory; make sure to select the right category

Pay special attention to your content

Try to get as much as relevant links you can

Read each search engines guide lines and follow them strictly

Don't spam

Don't use doorway pages

Don't cloak

Use wordtracker.com to research the proper keywords for your site.

Include your keywords in the alt tags of images.

Use the H1-H5 tags for page headings

The Page Title should match to the Meta Title of that page.

Match all internal anchors to that page theme.

A text anchor called HOME that goes to the HOMEPAGE does not help much. Be Creative. For Example- if your site is about Dogs then the word Dogs should be the anchor text to index.html.

Short one word anchors are better than longer ones.

Use links from Non-relevant pages such as contact us, trouble-shooting, policies, etc to PUSH relevancy and PageRank to only those pages that may need it.

No page with more than 100 links, 25-50 is optimal.

Add as much content as possible, page wise. 1,000 files listed in Google will get you a lot more visitors than 100 files listed will.
