This is a really simple concept once you have picked out the keywords you are trying to reach. You want your page titles to be short and to the point. Your page titles MUST use the keywords that you are trying to optimize.

Let's use a few examples:

Keywords we are trying to optimize: Fishing for trout, trout fly fishing, and trout fishing trips.
Instead of making a page title that says: "Find places to fish for trout and local fishing trips here", we can really cut that down and still get a higher effect. Instead of that let's use: "Fishing for trout | Trout fly fishing trips.

We used the "|" to get rid of useless words and still make a break between concepts.

Increased Ranking also needs some page optimization such as Header Tags
Header tags are simple little code snippets you place in front of and behind important points. They look like this <h1></h1>. Chances are you are using some type of webauthoring tool and these options are built in. For example in frontpage the area you are looking for looks like this. Highlight what you want your header to be and change "normal" to "heading1".

You can have many header tags on one page, but the header tags should be supported by text below it. All the "bold" text on this page is a header tag. You will notice that through out this page I have used words like "increased ranking" and "header tags" because those are the words we are optimizing for this page. Planning for optimization BEFORE creating your content is major advantage in achieving increased rankings, but you can always go back and fix your present sites if they aren't ranking well.

Alt Tags are also very important to increased rankings in the search engines!

Your page is all laid out and your all done right? WRONG! Make sure that all of your images have alt tags. If you don't your wasting valuable SEO optimization space. Your pictures tell a story both visually and textually. Make sure your pictures have alt-tags that define a keyword. An example would be to hover over the picture up top about header tags. I included a keyword and the word picture:
